The Chimpanzee-Rescue Project
What is J.A.C.K.?
J.A.C.K. is a French acronym for "jeunes animaux confisques au Katanga," or "young animals confiscated from Katanga." Katanga is a southern province in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the home-base for the J.A.C.K. organization which is dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of illegally seized animals.
The J.A.C.K. organization was founded by Belgians Franck and Roxane Chantereau in 2006. Their dedication was so amazing that the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo began turning to the organization for help in rehabilitating seized chimpanzees.
Many of the chimpanzees show up at J.A.C.K. with broken bodies and broken spirits. Primates do not handle sudden change very well and the sanctuary does its best to rehabilitate young chimpanzees that have been torn violently from their mother's arms.
J.A.C.K. has been so successful that the majority of the primates they receive do recover their health. However the overhead of running such a facility is a huge financial burden.
